Albert and Toni Roothbert created the Roothbert Fund to provide financial assistance to students pursuing higher education. Headquartered in New York City, the Fund is run by volunteers and issues scholarships for study at accredited institutions within the United States.
Who the Fund prefers to support
- Applicants whose daily lives are guided by spiritual principles.
- Graduate students and undergraduates who have completed at least one year of college (these applicants are preferred).
- Candidates who live in or attend college in these states/territories: Connecticut, District of Columbia, Delaware, Maryland, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia.
Award amounts and renewal
- Typical grants range from $5,000 to $7,000.
- Awards may be renewed annually for the duration of the same academic program (renewals will not be granted to fund a separate, additional degree program after completion of the originally funded program).
Application overview and required documents
Applications open online on November 1 each year and must be submitted by February 1 at 11:59 PM. Award decisions are made in late April and payments are sent directly to the recipient’s institution in August.
To complete an application you must submit:
- The Roothbert Fund online application form (you can save an application in progress).
- A scanned copy of an official transcript from your current or most recent school.
- Three autobiographical essays.
- Three letters of recommendation.
Application timeline (key dates)
- November 1: Online application becomes available.
- February 1 (11:59 PM): Deadline for complete online applications, including recommendations and transcripts.
- March: Selected applicants will be invited to interview with the Scholarship Committee. Interviews are normally conducted in person (virtual interviews may be arranged only in exceptional cases) in New York, NY; Washington, DC; Philadelphia, PA; and New Haven, CT. Attendance at an interview is required; applicants should plan for possible short-notice interview scheduling. Travel costs for interviews are not reimbursed by the Fund.
- Late April: Award notifications are mailed to recipients.
- August: Scholarship funds are mailed to the grantee’s institution.
Fellowship obligations (if awarded)
Recipients must:
- Maintain strong academic performance and conduct.
- Provide the Fund with transcripts annually.
- Attend one Pendle Hill weekend each year while on grant. Pendle Hill is a Quaker study center near Philadelphia that holds retreats twice yearly (June and September). These weekends, led by former grantees, are intended to promote thoughtful discussion and community among Roothbert Fellows.
- Complete seven hours of additional Roothbert Fund programming (examples include Playing in the Spirit, Fellowship Pods, and Social Hours).
- Maintain regular contact with the Fund through correspondence and visits.
- Promptly inform the Fund of any changes in academic or financial circumstances.
- Understand that the Fund may revoke awards if a recipient does not comply with these terms.
