Introduction
The Leonard M. Perryman Communications Scholarship for Racial Ethnic Minority Students provides a $2,500 award to support undergraduate study in religion journalism or mass communications. The scholarship honors Leonard M. Perryman, who served as a journalist for The United Methodist Church for nearly 30 years, and is intended to encourage students preparing for careers in faith-based reporting.
Purpose
This award helps a United Methodist undergraduate who plans to pursue religion journalism by funding study at an accredited college or university in the United States. The Perryman Scholarship seeks to foster excellence in communication fields, including both print and electronic journalism.
Award
One $2,500 scholarship will be presented to the strongest overall applicant.
Eligibility
- Must be a United Methodist student from a racial or ethnic minority group.
- Must be enrolled at the junior or senior level in a journalism or communications program at an accredited U.S. college or university.
- Must intend to pursue a career in religion journalism.
Selection Criteria
Applicants are evaluated on the following five factors:
1. Demonstrated Christian commitment and active participation in the life of The United Methodist Church.
2. Academic performance as shown by transcripts, grade point average, and letters of reference.
3. Relevant journalistic experience and/or clear evidence of journalistic ability.
4. Clarity of purpose regarding plans and long-term goals.
5. Demonstrated potential to succeed professionally as a religion journalist.
