Background
This scholarship was created by the flight crew of United Flight 232 to honor and thank the people of Siouxland for their heroic rescue and recovery efforts following the July 19, 1989 United Airlines Flight 232 accident.
Purpose
The fund supports graduating high school seniors who plan to pursue postsecondary training that prepares them for careers in the medical or health sciences.
Who is eligible
- Graduating high school seniors attending a high school within the Siouxland tri-state area (roughly a 50-mile radius of Sioux City, Iowa).
- Candidates must intend to train for a health/medical career (examples include nurse, physician, physician assistant, radiological/medical/surgical technologist, laboratory technician, physical or occupational therapist, etc.).
- Applicants must enroll at one of the following Sioux City, IA institutions: Briar Cliff University, Morningside University, Western Iowa Tech Community College, or St. Luke’s College.
How recipients are chosen
Award decisions consider academic record, ACT/SAT scores, involvement in school and community service, employment history, and the applicant’s essay.
Award amount
One-time scholarship of $2,500 (non-renewable).
Application requirements
Applications must be submitted by the February 1 deadline and include:
- Completed online application
- Personal essay
- Two (2) Character Counts recommendation forms
- Official high school transcript
