Kids’ Chance of Virginia is a nonprofit that offers college scholarships to children whose parent or guardian was killed, seriously injured, or developed a debilitating illness as a result of a workplace accident or occupational disease. Scholarships are awarded annually. Eligible students may reapply each year they meet the criteria.
Eligibility
- Be 26 years of age or younger at the time you submit the application.
- Be a dependent child of a worker who has been killed, seriously injured, or suffered a debilitating work-related illness.
- Demonstrate financial need to fund post-secondary education.
- Be accepted to, or planning to attend, a college, university, or technical school.
- Be enrolled or intend to enroll in a degree program as either a full-time or part-time student.
Required documentation
- Fully completed Kids’ Chance Scholarship Application including contact information for the student, family, and the college/university/technical school.
- Most recent academic transcript (an unofficial transcript is acceptable).
- Student Aid Report (SAR) from the FAFSA showing your Student Aid Index (SAI) — formerly called the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) — required if you plan to attend a 2-year or 4-year college or university.
- A short statement outlining your educational and career objectives.
- Proof of the work-related injury/illness or death — for example, a determination letter, a CLAIM NUMBER from the state workers’ compensation board, or a death certificate.
- Basic employer information for the injured or deceased parent/guardian.
Application process
Complete the application as thoroughly as possible; you may need help collecting some of the items listed above. After an initial review, the scholarship committee may contact applicants to confirm details or request missing documents — please reply promptly to any inquiries.
Scholarship awards are decided by the committee based on the strength of each application and availability of funds. Approved recipients will be notified of the award amount. Kids’ Chance will verify enrollment and, once the process is complete, remit payment directly to the post-secondary institution.
Allowed uses
Generally, Kids’ Chance scholarship funds may be applied to any expense included in the institution’s official Cost of Attendance.
