Hawaii Chapter ASLA David T. Woolsey Scholarship

Overview
This scholarship honors the memory of David T. Woolsey, a California Polytechnic alumnus and former principal at Woolsey, Miyabara and Associates. The award offers financial support exclusively for educational or professional development activities.
Who is eligible
- Currently enrolled students in the following categories are eligible:
- Third-, fourth-, or fifth-year undergraduate students studying landscape architecture, or
- Master’s students in landscape architecture.
- Applicants must be enrolled in a Landscape Architecture Accreditation Board (LAAB)–accredited program in the United States.
- In addition, eligibility requires that either:
- the applicant’s institution is located inside the Hawaii Chapter ASLA boundary*, or
- the applicant’s permanent residence is in Hawaii.
Note: The only LAAB-accredited landscape architecture program currently in Hawaii is the University of Hawaii at Mānoa’s Master of Landscape Architecture.
How to apply
Consult the General Application Guidelines for details on the online application portal and required procedures. All materials must be submitted by the stated deadlines and conform to the guidelines; supplemental materials submitted outside those requirements will not be accepted or reviewed.
Required application materials
All applicants must submit the following items through the online system:
1. General Submission Form
- Complete the online form with your contact details and information about your degree program.
2. Photo
- A color, horizontally oriented headshot in JPG format, minimum 1800 x 1200 pixels.
- Photograph should be well-lit, have a simple background, and show your full head and shoulders.
- LAF reserves the right to use submitted photos on its website and in scholarship promotional materials.
3. Short Bio for LAF Website (maximum 150 words)
- Upload as PDF, Word, or TXT.
- In 150 words or fewer, summarize your background, current studies, future goals, and relevant interests or activities.
4. Resume or CV (maximum 2 pages)
- PDF format listing education, work experience, extracurricular activities, and honors/awards.
- Add Applicant Name / Resume / Scholarship Name and page number on each page.
Additional materials specific to this scholarship
5. Proof of Hawaii Residency (required only if your university is outside the Hawaii Chapter ASLA boundary)
- Upload a PDF or JPG of a Hawaii driver’s license or state ID, most recent federal tax return, or other official proof of permanent residence in Hawaii.
6. Letter of Recommendation (one)
- Provide the recommender’s e-mail address in the online form; they will receive instructions to submit the letter.
7. Essay (maximum 2 pages; 500 words or fewer)
- Upload as a PDF.
- Describe autobiographical background and state your personal and professional objectives.
- Format: no more than two pages, minimum 1-inch margins, 10-point or larger font, no images or graphics.
- Include Applicant Name / Essay / Scholarship Name and page number on each page.
8. Work Samples (maximum 3 pages)
- Combine three 8.5" x 11" samples into a single PDF.
- Each sample must include a brief explanatory description. For group projects, indicate it was a group effort and describe your specific role.
- Add Applicant Name / Work Samples / Scholarship Name and page number on each page.
Reminder
Follow the General Application Guidelines and posted deadlines exactly. Submissions that do not meet format or content requirements or that arrive past the deadline will not be considered.
*Applicants or institutions should verify whether their school falls within the Hawaii Chapter ASLA boundary as defined by the chapter.
