Overview / Background
In 2004, alumni of Sioux City East High School created this scholarship to honor longtime coach Walt Fiegel and to carry on his positive influence on young people. The fund supports local students pursuing further education after high school.
Purpose
This scholarship is intended to help graduating seniors continue their education at a college, university, or vocational/technical school, whether they are working toward a trade certificate, an associate degree, or a bachelor’s/academic degree.
Who may apply (Eligibility)
Applicants must be graduating high school seniors from one of the following schools:
- East High School (Sioux City, IA)
- North High School (Sioux City, IA)
- West High School (Sioux City, IA)
- Bishop Heelan High School (Sioux City, IA)
- Sergeant Bluff‑Luton High School (Sergeant Bluff, IA)
- Dakota Valley High School (North Sioux City, SD)
How recipients are chosen (Selection criteria)
Candidates will be evaluated on multiple factors, including:
- Academic record during high school
- Evidence of good character
- Involvement in extracurricular activities
- Employment or work history
- Quality of the submitted essay
Award
- Amount: $2,000
- Term: One‑time award (not renewable)
Application requirements and submission
All materials must be submitted by the February 1 deadline and include:
- Completed online application (this scholarship uses the SCF common application)
- Personal essay
- Two (2) Character Counts recommendations
- Official high school transcript
