Overview
This scholarship program provides financial support to students pursuing education in forest resources. Each year one or more awards are offered to Ohio high school graduates who have been accepted into an approved college, university, junior college, or technical school that offers a forest resources curriculum.
Origin of the Fund
The first contribution to the OFAF Scholarship Fund honored E. B. Miller, a third‑generation sawmill operator and longtime advocate for Ohio’s forest industry. Mr. Miller began his career working with horses and operating steam‑powered sawmills; by the time of his death in 1992 he had owned and run sawmills across all four corners of Ohio. He played a role in developing the forestry program at Hocking Technical College and served as chairman of the OFA Paul Bunyan Show for more than a decade.
Those who established the scholarship in his memory believed strongly that the forest industry must attract skilled, committed people. To help ensure that future professionals are prepared to meet the sector’s challenges, the OFA Scholarship Fund was created to offer financial assistance to outstanding students pursuing forest resource education.
Purpose
The Ohio Forestry Memorial Scholarship is intended to help cover educational expenses for students studying forest resources. Award funds may be applied toward tuition, room and board, laboratory fees, or similar educational costs.
Grant Terms
Scholarship awards are grants and do not have to be repaid. The number and amount of awards each year depend on investment returns. Applicants may receive awards in multiple years but must submit a new application annually. At least one scholarship will be granted each year.
Eligibility
To qualify, applicants must:
- Be residents of Ohio and U.S. citizens.
- Be high school graduates who have been accepted to an approved college, university, junior college, or technical school with a forestry resources program of at least two years in length.
- Current college students are also eligible provided they submit proof of satisfactory academic progress.
Selection
Recipients are chosen by the Scholarship Committee of the Ohio Forestry Association Foundation. Preference is given to students who will attend colleges or universities located in Ohio.
